Executive Function
Skills Coaching
Setting your student up for success
Is your child struggling with the demands of school? Are papers constantly lost? Homework turned in late? Major assignments forgotten about or saved until the last minute? Your child isn’t just absent minded or chaotic; your child is struggling with executive function skills.
Children experiencing these challenges struggle to manage their lives and lack the organization skills necessary to succeed in school. This struggle leaves parents feeling bewildered and frustrated and children feeling stressed and struggling with self-esteem.
Hawthorne Learning Solutions’ executive function skills coaching gets to the root of these problems so you and your child can succeed and feel good again.
Whether working with high-achieving students or those struggling to pass, our work as executive function skill coaches helps students develop the planning, organization and task prioritization skills necessary to thrive in school and in life.
Using a collaborative approach with parents, teachers and HLS, your child will have clear goals and the infrastructure and skills to achieve them. Our coaching works on:
- Organization
- Time Management
- Planning and Prioritizing
- Task Initiation
- Use of a Planner
We’ll help you and your child succeed through expert coaching, continual support and refinement of organization systems and communication with you and the school.

How We Work
The first step is to fill out our registration form. This is then reviewed by Emma Hawthorne, co-founder of HLS, who will review it and ask for all pertinent information, from psycho-educational testing to grades. With this information, we’ll create a plan and pair your child with an experienced executive function skills coach.
After that, we’ll get started on your student’s organization systems, both at home and in the classroom. Digging into backpacks, binders, folders and planners—we’ll put in place customized organization systems.
Your student will start using a planner, checking teacher websites and online grading, and advocating for themselves by emailing teachers. They will learn how to prioritize their schoolwork, track long-term assignments and backward plan for large assignments. These plans will be shared with you via weekly email updates.
- I’m beyond amazed and appreciative of the services my daughter received. Hawthorne helped me advocate for my daughter whose 504 plan was being dismissed by the school . The geometry tutoring and executive functioning skills were highly effective. My daughter did a complete turnaround and finished the school year successfully.

- Our child who was diagnosed with executive function disorder and has had major setbacks in their education. Thanks to Emma and Matt and their amazing team our child has grown exponentially in their academics and their self-confidence has improved immeasurably! Navigating the educational system and having a child who needs different support to be successful is difficult and Emma has been a strong advocate for our family in getting our needs met.
- Milo
- Our son is in his second year of tutoring with Hawthorne Learning. His growth and maturation, including both academic and personal areas, has been amazing. He has learned how to organize and prioritize tasks, set realistic time frames and goals, use effective and efficient strategies, and to self-monitor and self-advocate for himself in all academic areas. The tutors helped our child find his voice, self-confidence, and personal agency with his teachers.

FAQs
How often does my child meet with tutors?
Frequency and length of tutoring sessions vary but range between 1-2 times per week for 55 to 85 minutes per session.
Do I stay with my child during the session?
Parents drop off children and we’ll greet you at the door.
Will my child be the same tutor each time?
We strive to pair students with the same tutor; however, schedules sometimes change and so do tutors. Our goal is a consistent match.
What happens if my child did not feel like the tutor was a good fit?
We value feedback and know that a good fit is key to successful learning. If it isn’t a good fit, please let us know and we will pair your student with a different tutor.
Where do they meet?
Tutoring sessions are at our learning center at 2110 Iron Street in Bellingham’s Sunnyland neighborhood. We also offer zoom and online sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
All of our time is important—we value your time and ours. We request notice of change of availability or cancellations by Thursday at noon of the week prior. Cancellations and changes made after this will be charged in full. This is to avoid changes that cause work on our end and impact other families as we request time/day changes. If you are late, we will text and call you after 5 minutes. After 15 minutes, the meeting will be closed and there will be a cancellation charge.
