How We Work

blue quoteI could never thank Hawthorne Learning enough for all the help they've given to both of my children.

The first step is to register with us. HLS co-founder Emma Hawthorne will review all pertinent educational history—from report cards and progress reports to psychoeducational testing. At the end of this, we’ll create a plan of study and pair your child with a tutor who is a good fit.

For elementary students, we usually meet for one-hour sessions, either once or twice a week. During these sessions, we’ll use school work or supplemental materials to practice the skills your student needs to develop. Whether it’s skip counting, adding mixed numbers, writing narratives or meeting reading goals, one-to-one, individualized support is the best way to improve student performance.

At the end of each session, you’ll receive an update of what your child focused on, what they can do it at home and, if needed, supplemental worksheets and materials. We also work with students over the summer so they keep current or catch up on grade-level skills!

We strive to pair students with the same tutor; however, schedules sometimes change and so do tutors. Our goal is a consistent match.

We value feedback and know that a good fit is key to successful learning. If it isn’t a good fit, please let us know and we will pair your student with a different tutor.

We request notice of change of availability or cancellations by Thursday at noon of the week prior. Cancellations and changes made after this will be charged in full. This is to avoid changes that cause work on our end and impact other families as we request time/day changes.

If you are late, we will text and call you after 5 minutes. After 15 minutes, the meeting will be closed and there will be a cancellation charge.
